The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham

A taut story of love, infidelity, and revenge set in China towards the end of the British empire. A film version with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton, pictured above, was made in 2006 (I couldn't work in a loaf of bread). The late empire was especially rich for the British novel (Maugham, Conrad, Forster, Greene) and this work is a classic example.

As always, I will make a loaf of bread, and everyone is free to bring whatever they want, including just themselves. Also, please note that in addition to rsvp'ing, you must text me through the meetup site in order to get my home address. The map shown on the meetup site only shows the general area where I live. If I don't hear from you then I will text you as the date approaches.

Maximum twelve people, minimum of six. If I don't have six people the day before the meetup I will cancel. No rsvp'ing the day of the meetup, it will be closed. Please try not to cancel at the last minute, that screws things up. Only those who have read the book are invited to join.
