NOVEMBER: Nosferatu the Vampyre by Werner Herzog

Next time we are going to discuss Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre, the most atmospheric and contemplative of all Dracula films. In Herzog’s hands, and thanks to Klaus Kinski’s incredibly subtle performance, Nosferatu is much more than an evil vampire thirsty for blood. He is a tragic character full of existential angst and philosophical musings, burdened by the meaninglessness of immortality. Death is not the worst... Can you imagine enduring centuries, experiencing each day the same futilities?

From his isolated castle in the confines of the world, we will follow him as he makes a last, desperate attempt to participate in human life. What are the effects of mortality on existence? And what its connection to love?

We will also consider the way that landscapes have been shot in this film, not merely as background for human action but as a character in themselves. Although Herzog has repeatedly denied his affiliation with German Romanticism, we cannot help but experience a certain quality of the sublime in the landscapes he films. But what is the sublime…?

We hope you can join us to discuss some of these questions and much more!
