NOVEMBER: The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson

In our next meeting, we’ll discuss five short stories by the wonderful writer Shirley Jackson, a master of the uncanny. In these stories we won't find ghosts, monsters, or any supernatural phenomena, yet fear slowly creeps in as we read on. The characters are mundane, the settings are quietly suburban, but portrayed at the exact moment where they show their most disturbing face, the one that always lurks beneath the surface. In Jackson's universe, which involves a healthy dose of humor, demons don't come from outside, they are not foreigners, but exist at the very heart of community, within the family and home. We’ll explore together the kind of fears that these subtle stories awaken in us, when the most familiar suddenly turns strange…

We hope you can join us!
