JANUARY: Waking Life by Richard Linklater + Sartre’s Existentialism Is a Humanism

Next time we'll discuss Richard Linklater's Waking Life, a wonderful film composed almost entirely of brief philosophical conversations between different characters. Although they discuss many topics, we'll focus on the problem of freedom and we'll put the film into dialogue with Sartre's Existentialism Is a Humanism, a classic lecture he delivered in 1945, where he argues against all forms of determinism and essentialism.

What are the consequences of affirming that we are radically free, without excuses? What does it mean to say that choosing is equivalent to creating? What is the relation between freedom and all those conditions in life that go beyond our power? Can we think of freedom in individual terms, or should we always take into account our relationship with others? Join us for a discussion of some of these questions and much more!

“You are free, therefore choose, that is to say, invent.” Existentialism Is a Humanism
