The Bookshop is a 1978 novel by Penelope Fitzgerald about a widow, Florence Green, who opens the first bookshop in the small, conservative seaside town of Hardborough in 1959, facing opposition from local merchants and an influential arts patron who wants the property for herself. The story is a "comedy of manners" that explores themes of courage, small-mindedness, and the clash between an outsider's good intentions and an insular community's resistance, ultimately ending tragically for Florence as she is forced out by a new law. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and adapted into a film.
