THE COLLECTED TALES OF NIKOLAI GOGOL, translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, contains "The Petersburg Tales", six tales reflecting Gogol's life in St Petersburg. Of these tales we are going to read "Nevsky Prospect", "The Diary of a Madman", "The Nose", and "The Overcoat". Gogol's tales combine the credulous imagination of the peasantry with the sardonic and cynical vision of the city-dweller. He opened the door to both Dostoevksy and Kafka, if not others.

NB: We are meeting on a Monday, instead of our usual Tuesday, this month.
