The early morning hikes for Boomertime continues in Barton Creek Green Belt. We meet in Travis Country (South Austin) at my condo or at trail heads nearby. Hike days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Start time is promptly at 8:30 am.
My goal is to have FUN and stay HEALTHY. It is not to set distance or climbing records. Health pros recommend at least one hour per day of a semi-vigorous exercise for long term health.
Hikes last about 2 hours, in which time we can cover up to 5 miles, depending on the group and trail conditions. If you are new to trail hiking please tell me. If you lack experience or have balance or health issues this group is not for you.
I hike or ride my mountain bike almost everyday, rain or shine, day and nite, on the same trails we will explore. Some of these trails are steep, rooty and rocky (“technical”). After a rain there may be standing water and mud. The rocks and roots will be slippery. Attendance is acknowledgment of the potential risks. Many of the trails we use are within the canopy and temperatures are cooler.
Proper preparation is essential. Eat breakfast - your body is an engine that needs fuel to perform.
You must bring water
(enough for your dog too), and consider a snack, hat, walking stick, sunscreen, bug spray and light-weight clothing that “wicks.” I wear water-proof hiking boots with light-weight wool socks for foot protection and stability. Part of the joy of a successful activity is having the right equipment.
My dogs Boomer and Todd hike with me. They do not mountain bike. If you have a dog that can be off-leash by all means bring it. Leashed dogs are hazardous to you on technical trails and not permitted.
The response in July was great. The boys and I hope even more Boomers will join us on our health quest of Austin’s great Barton Creek Green Belt.
PS – Afterwards cold drinks and healthy snacks are available at my house. I have plenty of dry towels, if needed
