DNA forensics laboratory
Two session, 2-3 h each session.
Modern molecular biology now enables invisible evidence to reveal the genetic identity of individuals at a crime scene. Forensic DNA profiling has been dramatically successful at contributing to evidence towards identification of the guilty and also towards exoneration of the innocent. We will discuss how this is done. Using hands on laboratory procedures we will learn basic techniques towards using DNA analysis to determine, among five simulated DNA samples, evidence for the presence of one individual at the scene of a (simulated) crime. We will also survey various DNA forensics methods used for a variety of applications. Also Included - what can possibly go wrong.
