Description: Join us for a strenuous hike to the summits of Mts. Field (4,327’), Willey (4,255’), and Tom (4,051’) covering about 9 miles and over 3,500’ of elevation gain. Starting from Crawford Notch, we will ascend via the steep Avalon trail towards Mt. Field, proceed south-east to Mt. Willey, return along the ridge to Mt. Tom, and descend via the A-Z trail and Avalon trail back to where we started. Participants should have prior winter hiking experience and should have completed hikes of similar distance and elevation gain recently. Participants must bring typical weather-appropriate winter gear including required insulated boots, hardshell jacket and pants, headlamp, microspikes, and snowshoes.
This hike will move continuously at a moderate pace with only short breaks to adjust gear. There will not be extended breaks for food, so come prepared to eat and drink while moving.
Depending on the weather and trail conditions, the trip could take 8-10 hours. We cannot guarantee an end time. Plan on a full day of hiking.
In the event of unsafe conditions, the leaders may cancel or propose an alternate route.
Please review the gear list and contact the leaders if you are unsure whether this activity is a good fit for you: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf
