Description: Mount Jefferson in New Hampshire offers rugged, close-up views of Mt. Washington and Mt. Adams from its alpine ridges all amidst stunning glacial cirques (Jefferson, Castle Ravine, Great Gulf). We will spend a significant amount of time above the tree line which will afford us magnificent views. This out and back hike on the Jewell and Gulfside trails is roughly 10 miles with an elevation gain of over 4000 feet. This is a very strenuous hike, which is very exposed to winter weather conditions . Weather permitting, we plan to maintain a slightly faster than average pace. Participants need to be in good shape and have significant winter hiking experience.

Full winter above treeline gear is needed, including base, insulation, and shell layers, plus full face and eye protection. Participants should have waterproof winter hiking boots with 400g insulation . Hydration is critical in winter and participants should carry at least 2 liters of water in wide-mouth shatterproof bottles and bring plenty of snacks. Participants should be comfortable using all forms of traction. Microspikes and technical crampons need to be fitted to your footwear. Kahtoola K10's or Hillsound Trail Crampon Pro with ¾" or longer spikes are an acceptable alternative to technical crampons. Mountaineering snowshoes are required. Plan to be on trail for 7.5-8.5 hours. Our goal will be to complete the hike by sunset, but you should bring a headlamp with spare batteries should conditions make that impossible.
See the link below for more details on winter gear: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
