Description: Have you been hiking the Whites all winter and ready for a new challenge? Join the leaders for a hike of North and South Twin (and possibly Galehead Mountain). We plan to hike 17+/- miles with over 4200 ft. elevation gain. If we're lucky, we'll have a clear day and be rewarded with expansive beautiful views of Franconia Ridge, the Presidentials, the Bonds, and the Pemi Wilderness. Note that this is weather dependent and we may fall back to Sunday, March 8th as a backup date if necessary.
The route includes steep, rocky, snow and ice-covered terrain; at least one stream crossing; and a long road walk. Given the length of the hike, we will start early and likely finish with headlamps. We will aim for a moderate (~1.8 miles/hour) but consistent pace - slower on the steepest sections, while stretching our legs on the flats - with shorter and efficient breaks. Winter hiking experience is essential; you should have some experience above treeline. If this sounds like fun, come join us! Participants are required to have and, know how to use, full crampons, mountaineering snowshoes, microspikes, 400g (or equivalent) insulated hiking boots, winter layers, gear appropriate for above tree line travel, headlamps with extra fresh batteries. sufficient food and water for the day and a pack big enough to carry it all. Ice axes are not required or recommended; trekking poles will be helpful. Please reference our Winter Hiking Gear List and reach out to the leaders with any questions.
