Description: Join Emma and Ian for an interesting, and more challenging, twist of Mt. Waumbek, one of the most commonly-hiked 4,000 footers in winter: a winter day hike to Starr King, Waumbek, and South Weeks! On the New England Hundred Highest, South Weeks (3,885’) is far less commonly-hiked in winter compared to neighboring Waumbek.
Expect an approximately 11.6-mile round trip hike with approximately 3,780’ of elevation gain. Participants should have considerable experience hiking strenuous 4,000 footers in the winter. While the trail to Mt. Waumbek is generally well-tracked and straightforward, the portion of this hike beyond Mt. Waumbek features trails that are infrequently hiked in the winter. It is very likely that we will need to break out this entire portion of trail.
Depending on weather conditions, be prepared for a strenuous 7-10 hour hike and potential winter conditions with cold, wind, ice, snow, and a strong likelihood of breaking trail. Please be an experienced winter hiker in good physical condition, with full winter gear including winter boots, microspikes, snowshoes, and multiple layers of non-cotton clothing.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
