Description: Celebrate peak winter season with a traverse of the famous Franconia Ridge. We will hike about 9 miles and climb about 3800 ft over varied terrain. We will summit Little Haystack (4725 ft), Lincoln (5089 ft) and Lafayette (5250 ft). Weather permitting, we will enjoy some of the best views offered to hikers in the White Mountains of New Hampshire..
The Franconia Ridge involves 2 miles of hiking above treeline Participants should have good physical conditioning and have significant winter hiking experience in the Whites. Participants should have recent experience in hikes of similar distance and elevation gain, and above treeline experience in this season.
Our goal is to hike at a moderate pace, taking short breaks, aiming for an average pace of 1.5 mph.
Gear List Participants should have appropriate winter gear and be familiar with using it, including: multiple synthetic or wool layers that you can easily add or remove (no cotton), water/windproof top and bottom layers, insulated parka, gloves, winter boots (400g insulation), microspikes, and snowshoes (crampons might be required depending on conditions). Participants must have at least one headlamp and spare batteries. The specific gear required might change and will depend on the forecast and trail conditions. A complete list of winter dayhike gear can be found at: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf
Food, Water All food for the day is the responsibility of the individual. Water: Bring at least 2 liters in wide-mouth, non-compressible bottles. Fill with hot water in the morning and store in insulated holders/thick wool socks. Do not use water bladders in winter. Lunch and Snacks: Bring a generous supply of high calorie, quick-burn food that won’t freeze. Lara bars do not freeze. Snickers and Cliff bars turn into rocks in the cold. Summit cookies are on us (your co-leader and leaders)!
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. AMC Trip Policy
