Description: Join us for a late winter hike to Garfield, a prominent peak in the White Mountains that boasts some of the best summit views in the Pemigewasset Wilderness (on a good weather day).
This challenging adventure covers a total distance of 12-13 miles with elevation gain of 3,250 feet , and will take approximately 10-11 hours on the trail. Expect a long and demanding day, as the terrain is rugged and the conditions can be tough. This strenuous hike will be undertaken at a moderate pace to account for the likelihood of winter conditions. Participants should be prepared to complete the last leg of the hike by headlamp.
Participants must be experienced winter hikers who have recently completed hikes of at least 9 miles and 2,400 ft elevation gain . Essential winter gear is required, including a hardshell (windproof/waterproof) jacket and pants, proper layering for cold weather, insulated winter hiking boots, traction (e.g. microspikes and snowshoes), and a headlamp or two. If conditions merit, crampons and above treeline protective gear may be required.
Traction decisions and other safety requirements may change at the leaders’ discretion and will be determined in the days leading up to the hike depending upon weather and trail conditions.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
