Description: Celebrate AMC’s 150th Anniversary by carrying the commemorative AMC 150 flag from Mizpah to Lake of the Clouds hut. This part of the hike (while caring the flag) is about 4.6 miles with roughly 2200 ft of elevation gain from Mizpah to Lake of the Clouds; we will be expose to above tree line for a good amount of this hike. This outing offers views of the White Mountain, camaraderie, and a chance to be part of our historic journey from Washington, D.C. to the Maine Woods.
After arriving at the Lake of the Clouds hut, where we will stay overnight, we will enjoy the views and celebrate this event at the hut, the next day as we see the flag going away with the next group, we will summit Mt Washington and hike down via Jewell trail.
The total distance of this trip will be about 13-14 miles, and near 5.000 feet of elevation gain, over 2 days.
Meeting time and place: AMC highland center, time and exactly location will be sent as we get close to the trip. Logistics: This trip requires a car spot, since the end and starting point are not the same, all the logistics will be sent as we get close to the trip.
Gear Requirements: Sturdy hiking boots or shoes Weather-appropriate layered clothing Water (at least 2 liters) and snacks/lunch Personal first aid kit recommended Trekking poles optional but encouraged for uneven terrain Sleeping arrangements to stay at the hut (sleeping bag and small pillow will do it)
Physical Fitness Expectations: Participants should be comfortable hiking 15 miles in two days with about 5,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The pace will be moderate with breaks to enjoy views and rest. Participants should feel comfortable hiking on exposed above tree live terrain; screening will be required ensuring safety. Weather and Contingency Plans: This trip will run unless conditions are unsafe (e.g., severe weather). In the event of dangerous conditions, the trip will be cancelled/modified. The leaders have an alternate route planned should there be rain and we choose not to climb the above-mentioned route. Registration and Waitlist: Space is limited to 8 participants plus two leaders, to comply with leave no trace principle and local regulations. We will run a waiting list in case of cancelation. Registration will open on May 27, 2026. Please register early and cancel promptly if you cannot attend so that others may join. Reserving your spot at the Lake of the Clouds hut will be directly with the hut, more information will be provided to the approved participants.
