Description: Commiserate with us on this first day of spring summiting Mt. Moosilauke (4,802'), the tenth highest and the most westerly of the New Hampshire 4,000 footers! We will hike about 10 miles and climb 2900 ft of elevation. We plan to hike at a moderate 1.5 mph, but depending on weather conditions, be prepared for a 7-8 hour hike at a moderate pace. Even though it is the first day of spring, we will encounter winter conditions that may include cold, wind, ice, snow, and the possibility of breaking trail.
Participants should be experienced winter hikers with a recent hike (this season) of similar distance and elevation gain. The summit of Moosilauke is treeless and offers some of the finest views in the White Mountains. Above treeline winter experience is recommended for participants.
Gear List Participants should have appropriate winter gear and be familiar with using it, including: multiple synthetic or wool layers that you can easily add or remove (no cotton), water/windproof top and bottom layers, insulated parka, gloves, winter boots (400g insulation), microspikes, and snowshoes (crampons might be required depending on conditions). Participants must have at least one headlamp and spare batteries. The specific gear required might change and will depend on the forecast and trail conditions. A complete list of winter dayhike gear can be found at:

Food, Water All food for the day is the responsibility of the individual. Water: Bring at least 2 liters in wide-mouth, non-compressible bottles. Fill with hot water in the morning and store in insulated holders/thick wool socks. Do not use water bladders in winter. Lunch and Snacks: Bring a generous supply of high calorie, quick-burn food that won’t freeze. Lara bars do not freeze. Snickers and Cliff bars turn into rocks in the cold. Summit cookies are on us (your co-leader and leaders)!
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. AMC Trip Policy
