Description: Our hike will begin on the Red Trail in the Plaistow Town Forest as we explore this wonderful forest. The Plaistow Town Forest is adjacent to Darby Brook Conservation Area in Hampstead NH, which extends the hiking opportunities. Many large white pines populate this woodland, and the forest wraps around a heronry that provides a sharp contrast to the forest that surrounds it. Great Blue Herons should have returned and begun to nest. The herons will reuse their nests from previous years that are constructed high in the dead trees (snags) in Heron Swamp. It is also the mating season for Wood Frogs and Spring Peepers. Kelly Brook, which flows throughout the forest, is a clear and cold brook. The covered bridge trail will take us across Kelly Brook into the Darby forest. We will hike about 6 miles exploring this forest that is tucked away in northwest Plaistow and east Hampstead NH. The Plaistow Town Forest is just over the border from Massachusetts border and is well worth the trip. Bring sufficient water and snacks/lunch. A garden kneeling pad or a piece of an old yoga map or sleeping pad are useful items to sit on during lunch breaks, especially if the ground is damp. are
