Description: Bear Brook State Park is over 10,000 acres, and straddles across four towns, and offers great opportunities for hiking. This park is also surrounded by other large swaths of protected land, including land owned by Manchester Waterworks and the Bear Paw land trust. Our hike will start at 10:00 AM, and we will explore the northern section of this large park, hiking about 6-miles with about 700-feet of elevation gain. Being early in spring, we should hear the chorus of spring peepers and wood frogs. The vocal calls are from male frogs attempting to entice females to approach. Some early avian migrants should be passing through and settling into the park. Our hike will start on the Bear Brook Trail, which will take us along Bear Brook (the park’s namesake) and Cascade Falls, and eventually to Catamount Hill, which will be an excellent spot for lunch and views. From here we will follow several trails looping our way back to the parking area. Remember to have about 2-qts of water and snacks/lunch. A garden keeling pad or a piece of an old yoga map or sleeping pad are useful items to sit on during lunch breaks. Have your rain gear for possible spring showers, and dress in non-cotton layers, especially, since we will experience cooler mornings and warmer afternoons. And of course, wear hiking footwear. As it is early spring, expect some wet trails. Also, trekking poles are helpful crossing streams and getting around muddy and wet areas.
