Description: Mount Chocorua, a "52 with a view" (3,490') is famous for its 360-degree panoramic views. You can see the White Mountain National Forest, the Lakes Region, and on clear days, the Atlantic Ocean. We'll approach the summit from the west, at less traveled route. It is a rugged, scenic route that avoids some of the higher-traffic eastern trails. In addition to rocky scrambles near the summit, the route also includes a fun scramble from the "Terrifying 25" (T25) list. The hike will be almost 9 miles with about 2600 feet of elevation gain and is expected to take 6-7 hours depending on trail conditions, fitness of the group and number of photo opportunities. Participants should prepare for "shoulder season" conditions, which often include a mix of mud, lingering monorail ice, and bare rock at the summit. The pace will be "moderate". Participants should have comfortably completed recent comparable hikes (this year) of at least 6-8 miles with over 2,000 feet elevation gain. Winter conditions occur occasionally this time of year in the mountains, some of the gear on the AMC winter gear list may be required https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf . Further details will be provided to participants the week prior to the hike. In the case of severe weather or other issue with the Moats hike, if the hike is not cancelled, the alternate hike will be White Horse and Cathedral Ledge in North Conway.
