Description: Join us for a 4-day, 3-night backpacking adventure across the rugged and remote Mahoosuc Range, covering approximately 32 miles along one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of the Appalachian Trail. Traveling south to north from Gorham, NH to Grafton Notch, ME, this traverse features steep climbs, exposed ledges, ladders, and the legendary Mahoosuc Notch—often considered the “hardest mile on the AT.”
We will carry full backpacks and travel at a pace on the slower side of moderate, moving as a group and adjusting to the terrain, with an even slower pace through technical sections. Campsites include established AMC sites as well as one optional dispersed site, depending on the itinerary selected. Highlights of the trip include open ledges with views of the Presidential Range, the dramatic summit of Goose Eye Mountain, navigating the legendary Mahoosuc Notch—the “hardest mile on the AT”—the challenging climb up the Mahoosuc Arm, and a final ascent of Old Speck Mountain before descending to Grafton Notch.
Participants should be prepared for long days, rough footing, and sustained elevation gain while carrying overnight gear. This trip is best suited for experienced hikers who are comfortable with back-to-back strenuous days, navigating steep and rocky terrain, and hiking for extended periods (8–12+ hours). The reward is a true wilderness experience through one of the most iconic and remote sections of the White Mountains.
After registering, participants will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about their hiking and backpacking experience and current fitness level. Final confirmation for the hike will be based on this information and a screening call with the leader to ensure the trip is a good fit for everyone. At that time, a detailed list of required gear will be shared.
