Description: Join us on a hike up Mt Monadnock, with stops at two other less-travelled peaks (Bald Rock and Monte Rosa) with similarly nice views . This is a vigorous hike: our planned route covers approximately 7.25 miles and 2400 feet of elevation gain. Expect rocky and steep trails, with some scrambling, and exposed open rocks near the summits. You will want good footwear with grippy soles for this hike. We will hike at a steady pace (30 minutes per mile on flat+30 minutes per mile per 1000 foot elevation while moving), with breaks along the way for snacks, water, delayering, etc. We expect the hike to take about 5-6 hours, but this is subject to trail conditions and the speed of the group.
What to bring: Required: Day pack/backpack At least 2 liters of water Lunch and snacks Wind/rain jacket Waterproof hiking or trail walking footwear with good tread Multiple layers of moisture wicking apparel (the weather on top of Mt Monadnock will be quite different from the trail head) Recommended/optional: Hiking poles Wind/rain pants Gaiters An extra pair of hiking socks and plastic bags in case your feet get wet Sunblock, insect repellent
Registering: This is an "application" hike, meaning the hike leaders will screen participants to make sure they have the required equipment and appropriate physical conditioning to comfortably keep up with the group. Please provide information about your most recent hikes (dates, locations, length and elevation) and about your exercise routines.
If you have to cancel, please do so through the AMC system ASAP, as it might allow someone else to attend.
Parking Fee/Car Pooling There is no fee for the hike, but the parking fee at the park is $16. We will meet in Jaffrey (exact meeting location and time will be emailed to registered participants a few days prior to the hike) and car pool to the trail head. Please let us know if you would be willing to be one of the designated car pool drivers and register your car for parking at the parking lot. We will divide the parking fee among the participants in each car.
Weather: Rain or high wind may cancel or shorten the hike.
General Hike rules: 1) We start together, stay together, and finish together. 2) No dogs permitted on these hikes.
