This is a ~ 6 mile hike to the summit of Cannon on a Wednesday. There is about 2381 feet of elevation gain. The first 1.5 miles up to Lonesome Lake are an old bridle trail with moderate grades and a relatively smooth trail. Shortly past Lonesome Lake the trail becomes steep and rocky, with boulders and scrambles in the final half mile. The summit of Cannon has a viewing platform with 360 degree views of Franconia Ridge, the White Mountains, and on very clear days Canada.
We will hike at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time for hikers who may be new to scrambles. We will stay together as a a group. The hike to take about 4 to 6 hours depending on the trail conditions and group preferences. We will take short breaks for water and snacks and a longer break for lunch.
Please come prepared to hike all day through any weather. Wear sturdy footwear suitable for rough terrain. In your daypack you should have a headlamp, warm jacket, rain gear, food, two liters of water, and any personal items. See the AMC three-season day hike checklist . This is intended to be a Womens+ affinity trip, but everyone is welcome. If you do not identify with that group, we trust that you have reviewed our allyship criteria, have done your due diligence to educate yourself, and have committed to abide by our Code of Conduct .
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip may be modified or cancelled.
