Description: Join us for a beginner-friendly 2-day / 1-night backpacking trip on the northern section of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway, between Pitcher Mountain and Washington Center, NH. This trip is designed for experienced hikers who are newer to backpacking and want to build overnight skills in a supportive group setting. While beginner-friendly for backpacking, this is not a beginner trip. Participants should already be comfortable hiking full days on uneven trail terrain and carrying a loaded backpack. The pace will be on the slower side of moderate, and we will hike as a group, staying together throughout the day.
This classic New Hampshire route features wooded trails, rolling terrain, several smaller summits, and rewarding views from Pitcher Mountain and surrounding high points. It is a great opportunity to gain experience with overnight gear, camp routines, pacing, and backpacking logistics while enjoying a scenic section of trail.
Day 1 will be approximately 10 miles and 1600 feet of elevation gain. We will set up shelters, prepare dinner, and enjoy a relaxed evening at an established campsite.
Day 2 will include a leisurely breakfast and breaking camp followed by a very short walk to our cars at less than a mile!
After registering, participants will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about their hiking and backpacking experience and current fitness level. Final confirmation for the hike will be based on this information and a screening call with the leader to ensure the trip is a good fit for everyone.
Gear List Participants will need to supply all of their own food and gear, including tent, stove, water treatment method, meals, etc. If you are missing any gear (especially a stove which is easy to share), please let the leaders know as we may be able to help you out.
A more detailed list can be found here: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Backpack_gear_list.pdf and the hiking gear listed here: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf
Carpooling Because this trip starts and ends at different locations, we will need to leave some cars at the end of our route and then carpool to the start. Leaders will coordinate this and will also send participants a document where they can coordinate their own carpooling to/from home and the trip location. Because of the need to spot cars and the 10-mile day, expect an early start.
