Description: Time for an adventure! We’ll explore several spots in the southern Ossipees, a circular mountain range just north of Lake Winnipesauke that was formed by an ancient volcano. From Bald Knob we’ll get a sweeping view across the lake, and from Turtleback Mountain we’ll get a majestic up-close view of Mount Shaw and Black Snout. We’ll also hike along the Brook Walk, which goes past seven cascades, including the 40-foot tall Falls of Song. Varied terrain, cool stuff to see, and a great time in the woods.
The hike is rated “Vigorous” at approximately 9 miles and 1,800 feet of elevation gain. We will move at a moderate pace of around 1.5 miles per hour. Participants should come with experience on hikes with at least 1,000 feet of elevation gain and be comfortable walking on rocky, sometimes steep terrain for six hours or more. We will hike rain or shine, unless the forecast is deemed to be dangerous (heavy rain or thunderstorms), in which case we will either cancel, postpone, or shorten the hike.
Gear list: - Hiking boots or hiking shoes - Several layers of non-cotton clothing - Headlamp - Rain jacket - At least 2 liters of water - Lunch and snacks - Personal first aid kit and medications - Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc.) - Insect repellent and/or bug net - Hand sanitizer - A backpack to put everything in.
