Description: Join us for a challenging hike covering Mt. Jefferson (5,716 ft), Mt. Adams (5,774 ft), and Mt. Madison (5,367 ft). Three iconic summits in the heart of the Presidential Range that together form a rugged and rewarding alpine traverse. Expect breathtaking views, exposed terrain, and a full-day adventure you won’t soon forget.
We will begin at Jefferson Notch, the highest trailhead in the White Mountains, ascending Mt. Jefferson via the Caps Ridge Trail. This steep and direct trail climbs quickly out of the forest onto exposed ledges, with rocky footing and steep scrambles over the distinctive “caps.”
From Jefferson, we will continue along rugged, above-treeline terrain to Mt. Adams, which is second only to Washington in elevation and known for its challenging, rocky terrain. We will then make our final push to Mt. Madison, completing the classic “JAM” traverse, before descending via Valley Way to our spotted car.
For this trip, hikers should be prepared to cover approximately 10 miles with about 4,200 feet of elevation gain over varied terrain, including steep pitches and scrambling. The pace will be moderate, and we will stay as a group. Despite the moderate pace, this is a strenuous, all-day hike requiring strong fitness, hiking experience, and comfort traveling on exposed alpine terrain.
Required Gear: Standard White Mountain daypack is required: 10 essentials including headlamp, extra warm layers (jacket, hat, and gloves), rain gear, lunch, water and other personal gear as desired. Be prepared for cold, windy conditions, especially above treeline. Sturdy footwear with grippy soles suitable for rough hiking and moderate scrambling. Refer to the AMC three-season gear checklist
