Description: Situated on the border of Maine and New Hampshire is Evan’s Notch, a beautiful mountain pass just west of the easternmost edge of the White Mountains. The rugged and stunningly scenic Baldface-Royce Range rises to the west of Evan's Notch and overlooks the Wild River Wilderness below. Come and join this group backpacking trip as we travel 15 miles in 2 days hiking through dense, lush forest on the steep and rocky mountain trails common to the region. We will spend considerable time in the alpine zone where we will be treated to amazing views of the greater peaks of the Presidential Range, Evan’s Notch and south-western Maine as we seek to summit South and North Baldface, Mt. Meader, and West and East Royce Mountains. This trip is targeting experienced hikers with previous backpacking experience and is not a trip for beginners! We will be traversing 15 miles with a cumulative total of 6000 feet of elevation gain on steep, exposed rocky trails (including the Baldface Circle trail which is featured on the popular ‘terrifying 25’ list of New Hampshire hikes). We intend to hike at a moderate average pace of 1.5mph while allowing a slower pace on steeper, tougher terrain. Those seeking to participate will be comfortable with scrambles on steep open ledges while carrying a full pack as well as descending in the same manner and should possess the strong level of fitness needed to handle the demands of the trip. Participants will be responsible for all their own gear, shelter, sleep system, and food. There will be a short car spot to begin and end the trip. The trip leaders reserve the right to modify or alter planned routes or cancel the trip at any time in the instance of any adverse/unforeseen event, unsafe trail conditions or inclement weather.
