Description: This hike is part of the Boston Chapter’s Women’s+ Hiking Series, a series of hikes that begin in the 3-4 mile range in May/June, with options to progressively increase in distance (up to 10 miles) and difficulty throughout the summer. Click here to see other hikes in the series. Jump in wherever is comfortable for you, and join us (for one hike or more) in building strength, experience, confidence, and community in the outdoors!
This hike includes the option to only hike Mt. Jackson, or continue on to Mt. Webster and hike somewhat of a “lollipop loop”. Either way, this hike is a rocky one! It includes several sections of scrambling, where you will need to use hands and feet to ascend and descend. With somewhat shorter total mileage, this is a great way to gain experience on rougher terrain in a supportive group!
The hike out and back to Jackson only is 5.2 miles with 2250 ft of elevation gain, and the loop that includes Webster is 6.5 miles and 2550 ft. There are several brook crossings along the route. Regardless of which version of the adventure you choose, on a clear day your efforts will be rewarded with views of the presidential range and Crawford Notch. No need to decide in advance - you can make the call on the summit of Jackson if you wish!
We will hike at a relaxed pace, and will not screen for pace.
Gear: Required Hiking footwear 2 liters of water Layers of non-cotton clothing appropriate to the weather forecast Rain jacket Lunch and high energy snacks Flashlight / headlamp with extra batteries Sunscreen Insect repellent and/or long sleeves/pants and bug net Backpack big enough to hold all of your items
Recommended: Headlamp Trekking poles if you use them Personal first aid kit Whistle Hygiene kit (trowel, toilet paper, bag to pack it out in)
Carpooling Carpooling is encouraged! It’s a great way to meet people, is better for the environment, and helps to increase access for folks who don’t have cars. We will share a carpool sheet with confirmed participants in the week leading up to the hike that has been pre-populated with your answers to the carpool questions. You will be able to edit the spreadsheet at that time. (Chao will be assisting with creating the carpool sheet only, and will not be participating in the hike.)
This is intended to be a Womens+ affinity trip , but everyone is welcome. If you do not identify with that group, we trust that you have reviewed our allyship criteria, have done your due diligence to educate yourself, and have committed to abide by our Code of Conduct .
