Description: “Oak Hill is a unique area that has gone through many historical changes. In the 1800’s this area was mainly open pastureland. The forest was formerly dominated by American chestnut trees, until the Asiatic blight killed them off in the 1920’s. Today Oak Hill has an unusually high number of Chestnut saplings, a reminder of earlier times. This area is also home to one of Concord’s largest white oak trees. This landmark Oak has a diameter of 44.3 inches at breast height (4’). The Oak Hill trail system was created in 1989”. Trees have been cleared just below the Dancing Bear Trail providing views of Mt. Kearsarge to the northwest, and to the north of Ragged Mountain and Mt. Cardigan. Our hike will zigzag to the summit following the Tower Trail and several adjoining trails, creating a looped hike. There will be nice views from the Swope Slope Vista on our ascent and along the Dancing Bear Trail during our descent. The summit (980-ft) is a large flat area that makes for a great lunch spot. Bring at least 2-qts of water and snacks/lunch. A garden kneeling pad or a piece of an old yoga map or sleeping pad are useful items to sit on during lunch. Expect to hike about 5.0-miles with an elevation gain of about 700-feet. Pack your rain gear and it is a good idea to have insect repellent, and even a mosquito head net.
