Description: This is a 9.6 mile hike to the summits of North and South Kinsman on a Wednesday. There is about 3225 feet of elevation gain. The first 1.5 miles up to Lonesome Lake are an old bridle trail with moderate grades and a relatively smooth trail. Shortly past Lonesome Lake the trail becomes steep and rocky as we climb to Kinsman Pond shortly below the Kinsman ridge. North Kinsman has beautiful views in all directions. South Kinsman is also lovely, but the views are more limited. Both peaks are 4000 footers.
We will hike at a steady pace, averaging about 1.0 to 1.5 miles per hour. We will take short breaks for water and snacks and a longer break for lunch. Total trip time will depend on the speed of the group and the amount of time we spend enjoying the summits. This should not be your first NH 4000 footer, but it could be your second or third.
Please come prepared to hike all day. Due to the variable nature of the weather in the White Mountains, come prepared for rain and wind. The summits will be much cooler than the valley! Bring rain gear, an extra layer, lunch, and at least two liters of water. You will be more comfortable with insect repellent, sunscreen, and a hat. Always bring a headlamp. Please see the AMC Day Hike Gear List and the Ten Essentials List.
The leaders are holding a rain date of 7/20 in the event of an undesirable weather forecast. We will reschedule in the event continuous rain or weather that precludes reaching the summits. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip may be modified or cancelled.
