Description: This hike is part of the Boston Chapter’s Women’s+ Hiking Series, a series of hikes that begin in the 3-4 mile range in May/June, with options to progressively increase in distance (up to 10 miles) and difficulty throughout the summer. Click here to see other hikes in the series. Jump in wherever is comfortable for you, and join us (for one hike or more) in building strength, experience, confidence, and community in the outdoors!
Join us for a scenic and challenging loop hike on Mt. Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH. A New England classic and of the most climbed mountains in the world, Mt. Monadnock rises to 3,165 feet and offers expansive 360-degree views from its rocky summit, with vistas stretching from the Boston skyline to the White Mountains on a clear day.
Our route follows a less-traveled ascent over Bald Rock and Thoreau’s Seat before reaching the summit. We will descend via Mt. Rosa, completing a rewarding loop that showcases a variety of the mountain’s terrain and viewpoints. Along the way, hikers can expect rugged trails, exposed ledges, and steep, rocky sections that may require the use of both hands and feet for balance and occasional scrambling.
This hike is approximately 6.5 miles with about 1,800 feet of elevation gain. Participants should be comfortable hiking on uneven, rocky terrain and prepared for sustained uphill climbing. While we will maintain a moderate pace and take breaks as needed, this is a moderately strenuous hike that requires a reasonable level of fitness and endurance.
When registering, please answer the trip registration questions as thoroughly as possible, including details of your hiking experiences over the past 6 months, dates, approximate distance, elevation gain and approximate time to complete the hike. Having this information will greatly assist the leaders in ensuring the hike is a good fit for participants.
We will hike as a group and maintain a pace that is comfortable for all participants. Registered participants will receive the meeting location, parking information, and additional details a few days before the hike. The hike will be canceled in the event of steady rain or other hazardous weather conditions.
This is intended to be a Womens+ affinity trip , but everyone is welcome. If you do not identify with that group, we trust that you have reviewed our allyship criteria, have done your due diligence to educate yourself, and have committed to abide by our Code of Conduct.
