Description: This hike is part of the Boston Chapter’s Women’s+ Hiking Series, a series of hikes that begin in the 3-4 mile range in May/June, with options to progressively increase in distance (up to 10 miles) and difficulty throughout the summer. Click here to see other hikes in the series. Jump in wherever is comfortable for you, and join us (for one hike or more) in building strength, experience, confidence, and community in the outdoors!
This is approximately an 8.5 to 9 mile lollipop loop over Chocorua and the beautiful views along the ledgy ridges to south and north of the peak. There is 2697 feet of elevation gain. There are some minor scrambles. Participants should be comfortable hiking over rocky, uneven terrain and prepared for sustained uphill climbing. We will hike at a relaxed pace, allowing plenty of time for hikers who may be new to scrambles. None the less, this is a moderately strenuous hike that requires a reasonable level of fitness and endurance. We expect the hike to take 6 to 8 hours depending on the trail conditions and the group pace. We will take short breaks for water and snacks and a longer break for lunch.
Due to the variable nature of the weather in the White Mountains, come prepared for rain and wind. The summit will be much cooler than the valley! Bring rain gear, an extra layer, lunch, and at least two liters of water. You will be more comfortable with insect repellent, sunscreen, and a hat. Always bring a headlamp. Please see the AMC Day Hike Gear List and the Ten Essentials list.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip may be modified or cancelled.
