Description: Enjoy a secluded northern hike in the less traveled and heavily wooded Pilot Range. We will trek across three peaks on the New England Hundred Highest list, Mount Cabot (4170 ft, also a NH 4k footer), The Bulge (3950 ft), and The Horn (3905 ft, also a 52WAV peak). This route includes a stop at the Cabot Cabin and at Bunnell Rock, offering views of the northern White Mountains and surrounding area. Other views along the loop include the Presidentials, Carter-Moriah, and Mahoosucs,
This rugged route contains rocky, steep, uneven terrain, and several stream crossings. This hike has a minimal amount of boulder scrambling, though covers a loop of about ~11 miles and roughly 3200 feet of elevation. The planned route may be modified or cancelled by the leader before or during the hike due to unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather or unacceptable trail conditions.
We are aiming for a moving pace on the fast side of moderate between 1.5-2.0 mph for the day. We expect to be slower on the ascent and faster on the smoother or flatter sections. We will take quick and efficient breaks for switching layers, hydrating, and snacking.
The hike is open to all who qualify. Registrants should expect a phone call from one of the leaders to discuss hiking experience, fitness, and required gear. Participants should have comfortably completed recent comparable hikes this year and be able to hold a consistent pace with minimal breaks. Hikers must have hiking boots, raingear, layered non-cotton clothing, trail food/lunch, and a minimum of 2 liters of water.
