Description: This hike is part of the Boston Chapter’s Women’s+ Hiking Series, a series of hikes that begin in the 3-4 mile range in May/June, with options to progressively increase in distance (up to 10 miles) and difficulty throughout the summer. Click here to see other hikes in the series. Jump in wherever is comfortable for you, and join us (for one hike or more) in building strength, experience, confidence, and community in the outdoors!
Join us for an out and back hike of Mt Washington via the steep Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. This is a strenuous hike of roughly 9 miles and over 4000 feet of elevation gain. We will begin along the Ammonoosuc River before hitting Gem Pool, where the terrain shifts into a relentless scramble up slick granite slabs and rocky headwalls. You will gain over 1,500 feet in just one mile before emerging at the Lakes of the Clouds Hut which is a fun place to stop for some water and a snack on the way up or down. From there, we will follow the historic Crawford Path to the summit of Mount Washington.
As with every season in the Whites, the weather can be unpredictable, especially on Mt Washington which has its own weather system. If it is raining consistently we will change the hike to September 2. Participants are expected to have all of the necessary gear including warm layers and rain gear. Participants must bring a headlamp with spare batteries, carry 2 liters of water and plenty of dense, high-energy snacks that can be eaten easily. Participants should wear hiking boots or trail running shoes.
Please also refer to the AMC three-season gear checklist: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
This is intended to be a Womens+ affinity trip , but everyone is welcome. If you do not identify with that group, we trust that you have reviewed our allyship criteria, have done your due diligence to educate yourself, and have committed to abide by our Code of Conduct .
