Description: Join us for a strenuous hike to Mt. Adams (5,797’) and Mt. Madison (5,367’), the second and fifth tallest mountains of the NH48s. On top of that, we will also aim to conquer 3 Terrifying 25 Trails: King Ravine, Subway, and Air Line Trail. Expect an approximately 12-mile loop hike with approximately 5000’ of elevation gain on rough, steep terrain at a pace on the fast side of moderate (1.5-2 mph but at a slower safe pace through the Subway trail). Wild and relatively uncrowded, King Ravine features some of the most impressive vistas anywhere in the White Mountains–not to mention the fantastic view from the summit of Mt. Adams and Madison!
NOTE: While King Ravine and the King Ravine Trail are beautiful and highly scenic, the King Ravine Trail is among the most difficult trails in the White Mountains. The lower portion of the King Ravine Trail features numerous challenging boulder scrambles, requiring participants to use hands to navigate under, over and between large rocks. The upper portion of the trail then ascends the very steep King Ravine headwall over loose talus, gaining approximately 1,100’ in just 0.5 miles. The Subway Trail, as the trail name suggests, expect some crawling, squeezing, lifting, and stretching. If the above sounds like fun to you, join us!
Due to the steepness and strenuousness of this hike, participants must have recent experience hiking other “Terrifying 25” or similarly-strenuous trails and must maintain a regular, robust cardiovascular fitness regimen.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. We will hold Sunday, September 6 as a backup date for this hike if weather conditions prohibit us from hiking on September 5.
