Description: Join us for one of the most iconic and rewarding hikes in New England: the classic Franconia Ridge Loop. This strenuous hike offers a rare combination of waterfalls, alpine terrain, major summits, and expansive above treeline views that make it a true treat for any hiker to experience.
We will ascend the Falling Waters Trail, climbing steeply alongside multiple waterfalls before reaching Little Haystack and the open Franconia Ridge. From there, we will follow the ridge over Mount Lincoln and continue to Mount Lafayette, the highest mountain in the White Mountains outside of the Presidential Range. If conditions allow, we will enjoy sweeping views across Franconia Notch, the Pemigewasset Wilderness, Cannon Mountain, the Kinsmans, and beyond before descending by Greenleaf Trail and Old Bridle Path.
This is a strenuous hike of approximately 8.9 miles with about 3,900 feet of elevation gain, including steep, rugged terrain, some light scrambling in a few sections, and nearly two miles of exposed hiking above treeline. Participants must have recent experience on White Mountain 4,000 footers or comparable strenuous hikes, be comfortable with sustained climbing and rocky footing, and be prepared to hike at a steady group pace for a full day. We plan to hike at an average speed of about 1.5-2.0 mph and complete the hike within 7-9 hours.
Due to the popularity of this route and the limited parking at the trailhead, we will plan for an early start and strongly encourage carpooling so that everyone has a better chance of securing parking. Participants should be prepared with proper footwear, rain gear, warm layers, sun protection, a headlamp with extra batteries, lunch, snacks, and at least 2 to 3 liters of water. Full 3 season day hiking gear is required.
A leader will contact registered participants to discuss recent hiking experience and determine whether this trip is a good fit. Confirmed participants will receive additional logistical details before the hike. The route, timing, or destination may be changed or canceled if weather, trail conditions, or group considerations require it.
