Description: Come for an epic day of hiking past the famous Glen Boulder above treeline to Mt. Isolation (4,004 ft) in the Dry River Wilderness. On a clear day there are spectacular views in most directions including a close look at Wildcat Mtn and Pinkham Notch.
This will be a challenging out-and-back trek covering 11.4 miles with a total elevation gain of 4,960 feet. The ascent will start gradually but nearly one mile in will become steep. Glen Boulder Trail will be very rocky with some scrambling required. Mt. Isolation is one of the lowest of New Hampshire’s 4,000-footers but don’t believe that means this will be one of the easiest. The highest point will be the junction of Glen Boulder Trail and Davis Path at 5,175 feet.
We will be intending for a pace of 1 to 1.5 miles per hour. We will take short breaks for hydration and snacking and to remove or add layers. Participants must have recent experience hiking similar distances and elevation and be comfortable with scrambling. Hikers must have boots or trail runners, rain protection, layered non-cotton clothing, a headlamp, food, and a minimum of 2 liters of water. For a full gear list, please refer to the AMC Three-Season Day-Hiking Equipment Checklist .
In the event of bad weather or dangerous trail conditions, the leaders may substitute a hike to Carter Dome & Mount Hight via 19 Mile Brook trail or cancel the activity entirely.
