Description: Join us for a out-and-back hike to the 4,024-foot summit of Mt. Galehead in New Hampshire. While Galehead may not be known for its summit views, an overlook just before the summit provides a nice view over Twin Brook, and from Galehead hut, there is an outlook with views into the Pemigewassett Wilderness. The hike is approximately 10.4 miles round trip with 2,500 feet of elevation gain. The trail is primarily a mildly steady climb, with a few water crossings, rocky and root-filled sections, and a steep section as we get closer to the hut. We will hike as a group at a moderate pace and will take short breaks for water/snacks and a longer break for lunch. Total trip time will depend on the speed of the group, but is anticipated to be 7-9 hours. Participants should or will have recent experience on hikes with comparable mileage, similar elevation, and varied terrain. After registration, we will contact you for further screening to ensure each hiker has the requisite experience and gear for the hike.
Participants should come prepared with appropriate three-season hiking gear, including sturdy hiking footwear, adequate food and water, extra layers, rain gear, bug spray, and any personal essentials needed for a full day in the mountains. Plan to bring at least 2L of water, snacks and a lunch. Weather in the White Mountains can change rapidly, and hikers should be prepared for cooler temperatures and windy conditions at higher elevations.
