Description: Join the leaders for one of their favorite areas within the White Mountain National Forest: The Sandwich Wilderness Area. This hike will include Sandwich Mountain and Jennings Peak, both on the “52 With a View” list. The hike will be point to point, covering approximately 10-11 miles and about 2800 feet in elevation gain. The route contains rocky, steep, and uneven terrain as well as one major water crossing and several minor stream crossings.
We are aiming for an average pace on the fast side of moderate, around 1.5 - 2.0 mph for the day, which includes short breaks for switching layers, hydrating, and snacking. We expect to be slower on the steeper sections and faster on the smoother or flatter sections. Please have snacks and water bottles within reach so that we can make quick and efficient stops. Because this hike is a point-to-point route, participants will be asked to assist with shuttling people and cars between the two trailheads (about 5 miles).
This hike is rated as “Vigorous” and is suitable for participants with a solid base of fitness and prior hiking experience. Registrants should expect a phone call from one of the leaders to discuss hiking experience, fitness, and required gear. Participants should have comfortably completed recent comparable hikes with at least two thirds of the elevation gain and distance of this hike within the past few months. Hikers must have trail running shoes or hiking boots, raingear, layered non-cotton clothing, trail food/lunch, a headlight, and a minimum of 2 liters of water.
Please see the 3-season gear list for reference: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf The planned route may be modified before or during the hike by the leaders due to unacceptable trail conditions (for this hike, possibly an impassable water crossing) or full parking lots. Heavy all-day rain will cancel the hike.
