Description: Join us on the last Saturday of Summer for an out-and-back hike of the Moats Ridge. The hike will begin and end at the southern trailhead of the Moats Trail and cross South Moat on the way to and from North Moat.
North and South Moat are both peaks on the 52 WAV list and offer spectacular and unique views on a clear day. Please note, this is a strenuous hike of about 10 miles with over 3,700 feet of elevation gain. There are several steep sections with poor footing and several sections of ledges that require scrambling during both ascent and descent.
Applicants should have comparable recent experience hiking difficult trails of 8 or more miles with greater than 3500 feet of elevation gain. We will hike at a moderate but steady pace and expect the hike to be a full day of 8 to 10 hours on trail (depending on conditions). We cannot guarantee a finish time.
Due to the length of the hike and the significant exposure participants will be required to bring headlamps, waterproof/windproof jacket and pants, appropriate sturdy hiking boots, and all the other necessary gear and weather-appropriate clothing for a long hike. Participants should be well-equipped and familiar with the 10-Essentials.
Mid-September weather in the White Mountains may be warm or it may be quite cool, we won’t know for certain until a few days before the hike. The hike will be cancelled in the event of significant or steady rain (or snow).
Approved participants will receive a detailed information sheet including the meeting time and location along with any final requirements and recommendations several days before the date of the trip. A carpooling spreadsheet will also be posted to facilitate optional ride sharing amongst participants.
