Description: Many people say that this scenic hike is their favorite in all of the White Mountains. Mt Moosilauke (4802 ft) is the 10th highest peak in New Hampshire and one of the most popular. The views from the summit can include many of the other 4000 footers in the White Mountains, Loon Mountain ski area, Lincoln NH and on a clear day, peaks in Vermont. The steep trail follows the beautiful cascades of Beaver Brook. A steep slab along the cascades has small wooden footholds allowing hikers to scramble up the side. The hike is not for the acrophobic hiker, the trail is on the "Terrifying 25" list (aka T25). The leaders have arranged for ideal weather conditions so that we can enjoy our lunches at the summit while admiring the expansive views. The hike will be 7 miles and nearly 3100 feet of elevation gain. The leaders will optionally add a visit to the South Summit for even more views and an additional 2 miles and an additional 450 feet of elevation gain.
This hike is for experienced hikers, we are anticipating a moving pace on the fast side of moderate, averaging around 1.5 and up to 2.0 mph. We expect to be slower on the ascent and faster on the smoother or flatter sections and take quick and efficient breaks for switching layers, hydrating, and snacking. Participants should be comfortable with steep rocky scrambling and minor water crossings. We will hike as a group and expect the hike could take 6-8 hours depending on conditions.
This is a strenuous hike suitable for participants with a solid base of fitness and prior hiking experience. Registrants should expect a phone call from one of the leaders to discuss hiking experience, fitness, and required gear. Participants should have comfortably completed recent comparable hikes with at least two thirds of the elevation gain and distance of this hike within the past few months. Hikers must have trail running shoes or hiking boots, rain gear, layered non-cotton clothing, trail food/lunch, a headlight and a minimum of 2-3 liters of water. We will be requiring Microspikes/Hillsounds (not stabilizers nor YakTrax) for this hike as winter conditions are often the case in the White Mountains this time of year.
Please see the 3-season gear list for reference: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf
The planned route may be modified or cancelled by the leaders before or during the hike due to unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather or unacceptable trail conditions.
