Description: Join us for an ascent of Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Adams, two of the most rugged of the White Mountains, and the second and third tallest mountains in New England, after Mt Washingon
We will be ascending by the Castle Ravine Trail, an extremely steep ( 2.8 mile section of the trail that ascends 2800 feet) and rugged trail that earns its spot on the "Terrifying 25" list. It involves frequent water crossings, passing under the Roof Rock, a natural rock tunnel, and a class 3 scramble up the headwall. This is not a hike for beginners. Participants should have good hiking fitness, and have experience scrambling on loose rock. Total trip will be 12.5–13 mi, with approximately 5,050 ft cumulative gain We plan to maintain a 1.5-1.8 MPH average pace with breaks for views, snacks, and lunch. Expect the scramble up the headwall to be slower for safety reasons, making total time a bit longer.
If recent trail reports indicate high water, we will ascend by the Castle Trail, another trail on the Terrifying 25 that has fewer water crossings.
Adams and Jefferson are quite high, and it will llikely be cold on the summits. There is even a possibility of early season snow at higher elevations. You should carry a well equipped dayhike pack, with the 10 essentials with special emphasis on wind and insulation layers, 2-3 liters of water, extra food, microspikes, and sturdy boots.
