Description: Hike Smarts Mountain (3238 ft) and enjoy panoramic views of neighboring Green Woodlands. Our hike will include a section of the AT that ascends with switchbacks through a hardwood forest and open ledges to Lambert Ridge. The route contains rocky, steep, uneven terrain, wooden steps and iron rungs. Participants should be comfortable with steep, muddy, and wet sections of trail.
Our hike will be approximately 7.5 miles with 2400 feet in elevation gain. We are aiming for an average speed on the slow side of moderate (1-1.5+ mph) for the day. We expect to be slower on the more technical scrambles and steep sections and faster on the smoother or flatter sections.
The hike is open to all who qualify. Registrants should expect a phone call from one of the leaders to discuss hiking experience, fitness, and required gear. Participants should have comfortably completed recent comparable hikes this year and be able to hold a consistent pace with minimal breaks. Hikers must have trail shoes or hiking boots, raingear, layered non-cotton clothing, trail food/lunch, and a minimum of 2 liters of water. We will be requiring microspikes for this hike in case of snow or ice.
Please see the 3-season gear list for reference: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf
The planned route may be modified or cancelled by the leaders before or during the hike due to unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather or unacceptable trail conditions. In case of severe weather the trip will be cancelled.
