Description: Join us for another strenuous and fast-paced hike on the New England Trail (NET) that traverses roughly 13 miles with over 1600 feet of elevation gain. The entire NET is a 235-mile trail that has been in existence for over half a century that runs from the border of NH through Massachusetts and Connecticut and includes sections of the Mattabesett, Metacomet, and Monadnock (M-M-M) trail systems.
Participants should be in good shape and be hiking regularly. Participants should have completed a hike or trail run within the past two months of at least 9-10 miles and over 1200 feet of elevation gain and be able to complete such a hike in less than 6 hours including short breaks . When you register please indicate the details of the hike that meets these criteria and when the hike occurred.
We will be covering section 15 and part of section 16 of the NET. We will hike through the towns of Erving, Wendell, and Shutesbury, MA, skirting around Hermit Mountain, along the ledges of Rattlesnake Mountain, along Ruggles Pond, and on towards Lake Wyola. Much of the hike will be within Wendell State Forest and similarly forested areas, but a little over two miles will be along roads.
Because the days are getting shorter, expect an early start and you must have a headlamp with you just in case.
After registering, expect the leaders to reach out to you with questions about your experience and fitness. Your registration will not be complete until one of the leaders has received adequate info and has confirmed you for the trip.
Gear, food, and water Participants must bring a headlamp with spare batteries, carry 2-3 liters of water and plenty of dense, high-energy snacks that can be eaten easily and while hiking. Participants should wear hiking boots or trail running shoes.
Please review the AMC day-hiking checklist and make sure that you are prepared. https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf Because this hike is a point-to-point route, participants will be asked to assist with shuttling people and cars between the two trailheads (about 30 min drive between start/end points).
Reminder: Please click the RSVP link above to register!
