In Long Island, Eilis Lacey, who traveled from Ireland to the US as a young woman in the 1950s is working in a department store when she receives devastating news from home: her older sister, Rose, has died. Eilis’s Italian-American boyfriend, Tony, persuades her to marry him before she returns to Enniscorthy to spend time with her grieving mother. Back in Enniscorthy, Eilis neglects to mention her marriage. She begins a romance.
