Have you ever wondered how those classic perfumes that seem to be on everyone’s shelf were created?

Or were you ever curious about the stories behind perfume houses that have endured for more than a century?

Let us embark on a journey to the past and unveil their secrets.

About This Class
Idée Fixe is a Boston-based perfume studio that has hosted 100+ fragrance workshops and events.

In Parfum 101, we will take you into the world of legendary perfume houses and trace the history behind some of the most influential fragrances ever created. No perfume-making experience needed.

The course begins with Eau de Cologne and the origins of modern perfumery. From a perfumer’s perspective, we will explore how more than 250 years of changing social conditions, consumer needs, lifestyles, and aesthetic preferences have shaped the evolution of fragrance.

Through historic houses such as Guerlain and Penhaligon’s, we will study their distinctive olfactory styles, signature structures, commonly used compositional techniques, and pioneering contributions to the perfume industry. You will also get hands-on experience recreating iconic fragrance structures found in well-known perfumes on the market, before ultimately composing an original perfume of your own.
