Effective Use of Student Response Systems in the Classroom - Research Discussion
Details
We're summarizing the findings of two recently published papers, which analyze different ways that student response systems, such as Socrative and Kahoot, can be implemented in the classroom and can affect student learning, motivation, and metacognition. After an overview of the studies and their findings, we'll break into smaller groups so folks can discuss the different ways these systems can be applied to different learning experiences.
Student response systems or polling technologies allow for students to quickly answer questions on an app, website, or clicker device. While implementing a system like this seems straightforward, there are many interesting questions around how they can best be applied to learning experiences. For example,
- Is it effective to show students the correct answer? A histogram of all student answers? Does it matter?
- Can peer discussion be incorporated between questions? Should students be allowed to change their answer?
- Does gamifying the experience lead to higher engagement? Anxiety?
- Are these experiences more effective with certain student groups?
While reading the papers might help provide context for the discussions, please feel free to join even if you're not able to read them ahead of time. The major points of the research will be summarized in the beginning and used as a starting point for further discussion. As a final disclaimer, I'll be summarizing the research, but I am not an educational researcher myself. My goal with this potential series is to create an environment where folks of all backgrounds can engage in the research and consider any applications to their current work. For those really passionate about educational research, we'd certainly welcome your expertise as you'll likely be able to provide additional insights to the overall body of research.
