Has anyone considered the Boston Public Library? They have meeting rooms that are free and open to the public, and there are lots of places just outside the library to buy coffee and other stuff. Since Borders complained that are purchases were small,? I don't think this would really be an issue...

Just sayin'.

I tired that! We host annime?at Harvard university on Saturdays, I asked once If I could be set up as an organizer, so I wouldn't have to post the event every week. For those who
are interested.
?
Also to start up a meetup at Porter exchange, however I never hear word from anyone about my Idea.. I took that as a?No..

Here's an idea:

Since the organizers of Tuesday night's meetup will ultimately make their own decision in the end, maybe you could organize your own meetup, say, on Wednesdays in the Porter Exchange, and see how it goes? That way our ever-growing group has more options, and everybody wins.

A pleasant evening to you all,

Your argument doesn't remain consistent, considering you're suggesting the mall
doesn't hold enough people, although it does house the facilities several restaurants
and a gym..

If I was to follow that logic, it would also suggest that restaurants don't support
the customer they intend to generate..or where would they put them?
?
I've been there too, it does have several restaurant in the bottom floor, suitable for a
meet up considering THURSDAYS MEET UP is in a sports bar, that could literally fit
inside the bottom floor of the mall..
So how can you suggest that there's not enough room, when we also have meet ups at gatherings in smaller facilities?
?
I thought this group was open to ideas, and welcomed suggestions here,
it doesn't seem my help was appreciated or wanted, so why ask?

Actually, Robyn was correct. I work for Lesley University in the public safety department. Kotobukiya closed so not so many Japanese people stop by to "shop". There are restaurants, but none that have enough sitting to fit a group of 15 to 20 people (and even if they did, everyone would HAVE TO order something which many people are not doing). As far as reserving adequate space through Lesley, I don't see that happening unless the group was part of the school or a student activity. Porter might fit your traveling needs, but I am sorry to say it is not a realistic solution.

It's also a hub for Japanese people, all around the area, to shop,
and the meet up on Thursdays is actually in a sports-bar, with little les s to offer than
an entire mall, this shouldn't be a problem.

Its a great idea, and it fits my traveling needs
I would love to see my suggestion taken Seriously,?they could use the traffic,
we could use the space.

i wouldn't normally "reply-all" but i'm very familiar with the porter exhange building (lesley's "university hall") and there really is no space for a meeting group. the spaces large enough are behind locked doors and you either need to be a university employee or student with the appropriate keycard access. unfortunately, there aren't any tables or other decent seating except for a few benches on the main floor where all the eateries are.

if there are any members of your group that work at or are enrolled in lesley, then you can work with the powers that be to get some sanctioned space in the building. barring that, i don't think you'll have much luck with porter exchange.

depending on how many of you there are you can try the holyoke center in harvard square. last i saw they had plenty of tables/chairs.

sorry guys! :)

Hi, I would like to suggest setting up a different location, that can handle the volume, and support a variety for purchases..This may be a great time to consider the Porter Exchange in Porter square. Tons of room to move about, tons of things to buy, great place to meet Japanese people and shops, and It wouldn't coast me twice to pay. My regular bus pass, wont let me commute there with out paying extra, with defeats the purpose(to me) for the bus pass..

Anyway This is what I would request, there wouldn't be much of an issue with tables, etc..

Konbanha, mina-san!

For those of you who attend the Tuesday Study Night Meetups at the
Borders Cafe in Downtown Crossing, there are some important updates
you need to know about.? This evening, a shift manager spoke to me
about a few things which will impact our meetings.

Issues:

1)? For those of you who have attended on a regular basis, you may
have noticed that our group has gotten quite large.? So has Borders.
Technically, we are not supposed to be moving the tables and chairs
around in the main area, and we have been asked not to do so anymore.
There are 2 alternatives to this, which will be discussed in the
"Solutions" section of this email.

2)? It was noted that, although there wasn't a problem tonight in
particular, the staff at Borders Cafe has had multiple problems in the
past with members of our group bringing in food from other cafes.? It
was also indirectly and politely hinted that the number of purchases
made at Borders Cafe was very small, given the size and number of our
group, and has consistently been so.? As some of you are aware, I sent
an email about this awhile ago; at this point, I think a plan needs to
be put into place.? Details in the "Solutions" section.

3)? The final major issue was one of time.? Both the bookstore and
cafe at Borders close at 9:00 pm.? Our group always stays until the
last minute.? Because we are so large, this means that we take extra
time to put the tables and chairs back where we think they were, clean
up our empty items, etc.? It also means a lot of extra time and work
for the Cafe employees, because they have to stay behind until they've
placed the tables and chairs where they REALLY go, mopped the floor,
wiped down the tables, and picked up any items we may have left
behind.? I imagine this must be even more of an inconvenience when
people leave behind trash from food that wasn't even purchased at
Borders Cafe.

The shift manager I spoke to was very polite and helpful, and gave me
some information about space at the Cafe, but I think everybody there
tonight could sense that a lot of the staff were unhappy with us.
Because basically, to sum up: we are a very large group that doesn't
spend much money at the cafe, brings in food purchased outside (and
leaves the mess from other food for Borders employees to clean up),
takes up all the tables without tipping, and leaves late so that the
Cafe employees have to stay late to clean up (again, for no tips).

Now, I know that we all try to be careful, and many of us are
considerate of making a purchase and cleaning up, but as a whole, that
is not a good impression.

Solutions:

1)? The shift manager told me about 2 possibilities for continuing to
use the space at Borders.? We may reserve the conference room, which I
have never seen, but which holds 15-20 people.? There was no fee
mentioned, so I think it would be free.? To do this, someone must call
the store's main line,[masked], and ask for Dan (the manager).? I
will call tomorrow and ask him about arranging a regular reservation.
Since my office is in the area, I will also stop by and meet with him
in person, which I think would be a good idea.???I was also told we
could move 1 or 2 tables in the back area (near the elevators),
instead of the main area.? For those of you who have seen the space,
it would not really be large enough for us, so I think the best thing
for now is to try and get that conference room.

2)? At this point, I think we need to enforce a "minimum purchase
policy" for our group.? Perhaps each week half of us could purchase
one or more items from the Cafe, while the other half contribute $2
each to leave as a tip for the cafe employees?? Of course, as many
people who want to purchase and/or tip always can and are encouraged
to do so.? We can take turns from week to week so that the same people
aren't always purchasing (if they don't want to).? For those that
prefer to purchase food or beverages from outside, please do your best
to finish them and dispose of all trash before entering Borders (or
keep leftovers in a bag).? And yes, you would also need to take your
turns purchasing or tipping at Borders.

3)? Borders Cafe employees let us know when they are about to close.
Typically, we get a 15-minute warning, a 10-minute warning, a 5-minute
warning, and then they close.? I am not sure if the conference room
closes at 9:00 like the main space, but let's assume it does until I
speak with Dan tomorrow.? From now on, depending on how the new setup
works,? let's keep an eye on the time and try to walk out the door no
later than 8:45 to give Borders employees plenty of time to close up.
That may mean that we start packing up at 8:40, as it usually takes us
a few minutes to gather all of our belongings.

These are just a few ideas; others are more than welcome to make
suggestions.? While we understand that times are tough and don't want
to make anyone feel uncomfortable, we also have to realize that every
week, we are taking almost all of the cafe space away from people who
might support their business and tip the staff (or at least let them
go home on time).? It is very important to realize the impression we
are making as a group.? I know that everyone tonight saw how
uncomfortable the Cafe employees seemed, and though they were all
polite, it was not pleasant.? I think we are a great group and it
takes very little effort to make sure we are showing the Borders staff
our best consideration.? Because the group has grown so large, members
are looking for other locations.? But it is not easy to find a space
for so many people, every week, that is free (or close to it), in a
safe area, and easily accessible by public transportation.? At the
very least, it will take a little while, so in the meantime, we need
to work with what we have so that we can continue to hold our Study
Nights.

Sorry for the super-long email, guys.? Thank you for reading, and
please feel free to give your opinion on my ideas and suggest your
own.? After I speak with Dan tomorrow, I will send another update
email.

Mina-san, isshoni ganbaroune~
