BostonJS: Thursday 5x5

Details

Thursday is the 5th day of the week, and April 2015 has 5 Thursdays, so we're back this month on what will now be our regularly recurring date: the last Thursday of the month!

Our first speaker on the evening will be Kianosh Pourian (http://twitter.com/kianoshp), whose talk, "Step Away from the Framework!!" will ask whether we've lost our way and are blindly going through the motions of creating web applications using frameworks. Are frameworks the really answer? Kianosh thinks micro-libraries still provide a compelling approach to building maintainable applications, and he'll explain why!

Next up, Mozilla engineering manager Naveed Ihsanullah (http://twitter.com/naveedi) will present "JavaScript and Shared Memory," detailing the Firefox team's ongoing development of low level shared memory and locking primitives
for JavaScript. The goal is to support any concurrency and parallelism
models the the community comes up with from low-level pthreads to Java
semantics to higher level constructs like map/reduce. While the work is is ongoing research, he (and the whole Firefox team) are excited to show BostonJS where they're at and get your input!

Finally, Leo Balter (http://twitter.com/leobalter), a recent transplant from Rio de Janeiro, will talk about the small acts that have a big impact on local groups in his talk "Communities are dead, long live the communities!" He'll talk about the lessons he learned organizing the NiteroiJS (http://niteroijs.org/) meetup and key factors that impact growing a supportive, sustainable community, whether it's in Brazil or Boston!

We're also psyched to have Smarterer (http://smarterer.com) on board this month as a sponsor! They're a Boston-based company with a skill-sharing and assessment tool that can help organizations get even smarter...er! We're thrilled to have them join us in supporting the mission this month! Thanks!

We're looking forward to seeing everyone again! If you have questions about anything that's going on, get in touch with us @bos_js (http://twitter.com/bos_js), over Meetup or at bostonjs@bocoup.com .
