Introduction to Three.js

Details

Three.js is a lightweight library that lets you easily show 3D content in the browser, both on desktop and mobile. In this meetup you will learn the basics of three.js from an expert.

This is a workshop, where you can get your hands dirty with the code, or just watch and get a sense of how three.js works. Knowing how to program in some language is all you’ll need.

To prepare for the class we recommend you download the slideset and demo programs here (https://github.com/erich666/BasicsOfThreeJS/archive/master.zip). Probably the most important thing is setting up local access (http://bit.ly/webglsetup), so you can see textures. See slide 2 (http://www.realtimerendering.com/basics3js/#2) in the slide set.

After the hour-long workshop the lecturer and teaching assistants will stay around and help anyone with anything they're trying to do. By the end of the class you'll know the basics of three.js and how to learn more.

Our guest lecturer is Eric Haines (http://erichaines.com/). Eric designed the free massive open online course "Interactive 3D Graphics" (https://bit.ly/ericity), which uses three.js throughout. Among other bits of code, he contributed the teapot example (http://threejs.org/examples/#webgl_geometry_teapot) to three.js. He is perhaps best known as a coauthor of the textbook "Real-Time Rendering" (http://realtimerendering.com/).
