Details

Marathon Monday has an electric atmosphere and my favorite day of the year. A lot of variety to photograph on this day. Runners, cheering crowds and good vibe all round. If this isn't necessarily your favorite subject matter, try it. There are many other photo opportunities with flowers and trees blooming and a bit of street photography and candid pics. I have photographed the marathon for several years in a row. The best place for variety is in Newton, around City Hall to Heartbreak Hill. This avoids huge crowds (and thus restricted movement photo possibilities) at the start in Hopkinton.

Plan: Meet at Newton City City Hall west entrance at 8:30AM (circular parking lot), This time allows finding good vantage points. Wheelchair athletes come by around 9AM and then runners afterwards. Along the course on Commonwealth Ave, there are metal barriers, but less crowds to get in the way (compared to the start and finish lines). Traditionally after our meetups, we will go out for a post meal recap. However, there aren't really any restaurants in the area, so plan accordingly. Event will be canceled If moderate to heavy rains are likely. I plan on staying for about 2+ hours in Newton.

Post Newton Option: After shooting in Newton, I usually travel via T to Arlington St. Station (next to Public Gardens). I then walk towards Copley Sq to get shots of finishing runners. (There are more closed off areas/restrictions as you get closer to Copley Sq. But still doable if you look for opportunities.) Around mid-afternoon runners are still coming in and great pics of their triumph and/or exhaustion. I've never had a runner turn down pics. You could also go to the Public Garden for spring pics there. Doing both Newton and Copley Sq. is ambitious and makes for a somewhat long day, but well worth it.

Gear: A 24-70mm lens is a must. A wide-angle lens is great for larger crowd shots and helpful in Copley Sq. You'll want to use fast shutter speeds and bring any rain protection if inclement weather is predicted. And of course, your phone can be used if that’s what you have.

Transportation: I drive via Mass Pike and find street parking around Newton North High School and then a 15-minute walk to City Hall. Commonwealth Ave will be closed, You can also take the green line. It's a 25-minute walk from Newton Center stop or Newton Highlands stop.
